As everyday citizens, we bear witness to these tragedies and we’re left questioning — when does it stop? When do we say enough is enough? The Malik Adam James (MAJ) Foundation is a beacon of hope and action in this tumultuous storm, born out of a profound tragedy that forever changed the fabric of our society.
Our journey began on a heartbreaking day, February 14, 2009. It was a day when heaven embraced an angel, our beloved Malik Adam James, and left us on earth with a wound so deep, it seemed impossible to heal. The unfortunate casualty was a direct consequence of reckless firearm use on the poignant streets of Coney Island. As a society, we were handed an eternal heartache, a grim reminder of the repercussions of uncontrolled gun violence.
Fast forward to the same date, eight years later, we found ourselves revisiting the haunting reality of our loss. A mass shooting at a high school in Florida ripped through the hearts of the nation, claiming 17 innocent lives. The shockwaves of this catastrophe reverberated through our collective conscience, reinforcing the urgency for substantial change, both immediate and future-focused.
There is no denying that we are living in a reality where loss due to gun violence has become frighteningly commonplace, an unacceptable norm. Our collective inaction, our tolerance of this status quo is a discredit to our humanity. It is high time we shake off our apathy and actively work towards transformation!
